SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT -
The recent turmoil caused by the January 6th mob scene at the nation’s capitol and the turmoil now over the Supreme Court decision which overturns Roe v. Wade in regard to federal legal recognition of a “right” to an abortion both remind me of the turmoil in the late 60’s and early 70’s over civil rights and the war in Vietnam. The mob scenes are much the same and the violence that can occur is tragic. There seems woven into our national fabric a capacity for violence, perhaps symbolized by the additional controversy over gun rights in the wake of mass shootings in Buffalo, NY and Uvalde, TX. “Peaceful” demonstrations result in arrests.
To add to all of this, 2022 is a mid-term election year. Politicians of all stripes are saying what they think they need to say to get elected. There are even efforts by political parties to take charge of the machinery of voting and compromising the entire system of free and open elections, like what is seen in many other lands. It is not simply our civil democracy/republic that is at stake. Our very everyday physical and spiritual life is at stake. A political fantasy about a stolen election has turned over a rock and revealed an ugly racism and a violent desire to destroy millions of citizens who are not white!!!
I pray for a return to reasonable dialogue instead of screaming, and consistent adherence to the fundamental values of our civil democracy and, for us Catholics, a better understanding of our faith and obligations in such a land. IT’S SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.
It Has Been Said
But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace,
