Word to the Wise
Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 21st Thursday in Ordinary Time
[1 Corinthians 1:1-9 and Matthew 24:42-51]Jesus said to his disciples: "Stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come."
It is not easy to live with an uncertain certain event. You know it's going to happen but not exactly when - a bit like childbirth. What do you do in the meantime? History has shown that some people pass that time by trying to guess when the uncertain certain event is going to happen! They add up numbers, etc. and then announce to the world (and, I suppose to Jesus himself!) that the Lord will return on such and such a date! History has also shown that these eschatological prognosticators (Second Coming bettors)are uniformly mistaken! The gospel suggests rather strongly that the important thing is not WHEN Christ will come. The important thing is what to do TILL he comes. Today's gospel scripture has some rather blunt advice. If you "live as though there's no tomorrow", you can't count on having a long term future with God. What should one do? One should page forward to Chapter 25:31-46 and read the list! Or page back to the Sermon on the Mount! Or (negatively) read Chapter 23 on how NOT to be a disciple. Get with the program today and you won't need to worry about when the Second Coming will take place. You'll be too busy! AMEN
