Word to the Wise
Friday, October 20, 2006 - 28th Friday in Ordinary Time
[Ephesians 1:11-14 and Luke 12:1-7]Are not two sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God. Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.
Outside my office window there is a bird feeder. Its principal visitors are sparrows. I try to keep the feeder supplied with seed, but it's a never ending commitment because the sparrows can get through the contents in a few hours. It's a good thing God takes care of them because my absentmindedness (which can include forgetting to send this reflection the night before) might keep those little birds hungry! I admit to putting the bird (sparrow) feeder out because the reminder of God's providence is a powerful one. (It's certainly more powerful than the image of counting the hairs on my head which are getting fewer and fewer!) Those little birds would appear to have no cares at all, but I suspect their day is one long search for food. I know that when there is a hawk around, I don't see them at all. That reminds me, too, that God takes care of the hawk, too, in the form of sparrows! The image in Luke was meant to console early Christian preachers who were facing opposition and persecution in response to all their efforts to spread the gospel. It is a consoling image to this preacher as well who really doesn't face much opposition and certainly no persecution. Yet, I have my worries like anybody else. If nothing else, keeping that bird feeder full reminds me that God will see that I am fed too! AMEN
