Word to the Wise
Saturday, December 2, 2006 - 34th Saturday in Ordinary Time
[Revelation 22:1-7 and Luke 21:34-36]Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man!
These words close the liturgical year. Tomorrow will begin a new liturgical cycle - Cycle C/Year 1. That is one way of looking at it. Another way is to recognize that the story of Jesus goes on and on. We are in the position of the child who begs the parent to tell the same story over and over again. And we'd better not leave out a single detail! Keeping the story alive is what those last words of Luke mean! Generation after generation has had to weather the storms and the challenges to faith on an everyday basis. Allowing ourselves to get lazy and cut corners in the story may mean being surprised by the return of the Master or the anguished correction from the listener! Purple vestments, Advent wreaths and Jesse Trees will alert us to a change in the liturgical climate. They will have to work hard since the "Christmas rush" has already begun. Perhaps so, but we know that we cannot leave out any part of the story, and the anticipation and waiting are part of that story. Even as we say, "Be strong and stay faithful!" - in the next breath we have to say, "In the beginning....." AMEN
