Word to the Wise
Thursday, December 7, 2006 - St. Ambrose
[Isaiah 26:1-6 and Matthew 7:21, 24-27]Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.
It might be an interesting exercise to ask ourselves whose advice we would follow, or even to ask whom we might approach for advice on major questions in life. Whose word would we trust? Jesus tells us that listening to his word and acting on it is like being founded on rock! I am put in mind of the famous insurance commercial, "Get a piece of the rock." Indeed, we have an expression for the wise persons in our life: He/she has been my rock of Gibraltar! Advent is the time of promise. It is a time when we are asked to put our trust in God's promise. In an age when political and social promises seem to be made simply to buy time and with no intention of fulfillment, we are rapidly losing the ability to accept a promise. Isaiah today tells us that the Lord is an eternal rock. God's promise is certain. In Advent we anticipate the fulfillment of that promise and celebrate it not only at Christmas but throughout the year. There is no better foundation on which to build a life. AMEN
