Word to the Wise
Monday, January 1, 2007 - Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God
[Numbers 6:22-27; Galatians 4:4-7; Luke 2:16-21]The shephers went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child. All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds.
Although the calendar changes today, the message remains the same! Christ is born. God enters human history. We know the story, but do we, like the shepherds, make that story known? Is anyone amazed by what we have to say about the meaning of this event? It will outlast all the guarantees and batteries! The ornaments go back into the closet or attic. The tree is either put on the curb or taken apart! The gift wrappings are in the trash. But the message remains and it is about Mary and Joseph and the child lying in the manger. New Year's resolutions often go the way of Christmas presents and wrappings. One might make a more lasting resolution in regard to making the message known. Perhaps someone just might be amazed and look for themselves and join in glorifying God for all they have heard and seen just has it has been told to them by one of us! Happy New Year! AMEN
