Word to the Wise
Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - First Wednesday in Ordinary Time
[Hebrews 2:14-18 and Mark 1:29-39]Surely he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham; therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.
I find those words from the first scripture of the day to be very consoling. We have an expression, "then you know..." that we use when someone indicates that they have had an experience similar to our own. There is at least a momentary understanding or bonding that occurs. The Letter to the Hebrews makes it clear that even if Jesus has an exalted status, he is nevertheless able to understand the trials and tribulations of "ordinary mortals" like ourselves. One of the important questions to ask is whether or not it matters to us that Jesus understands our situation? Do we expect anything like that from him in the first place? Is our faith helpful to us when we are being "tested?" Do we place God on some kind of infinite pedestal that removes us from divine compassion? Perhaps we might recall the words of the old hymn, "Nobody knows the trouble I've seen....nobody knows but Jesus!" AMEN
