Word to the Wise
Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - Second Tuesday in Ordinary Time
[Hebrews 6:10-20 and Mark 2:23-28]God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have demonstrated for his name by having served and continuing to serve the holy ones.
The two summers before I entered the Dominican Order I spent learning Latin in an accelerated program at John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH. The program was headed up by a Jesuit who was a tiny guy but a spiritual giant, named Castellano. At the end of the program each summer, he would give a kind of pep talk to the participants. The two points that I always remember from that talk are 1) Every outfit has its crazy people (Is it I, Lord?) which the Lord puts there to keep us on our toes; 2) Your greatest enemy is discouragement. It is that second point that comes back to me often (the "crazies" you have with you always). Discouragement can be a very difficult enemy. Along with that memory come the lines from Hebrews I quoted above from today's scripture. Many people who are in the helping professions have moments when nothing seems to be going right and sometimes that lasts longer than it seems it ought to. One can get to wondering if God is paying any attention or really cares. All those years and efforts seem for nought! But the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that God remembers and that our work is not in vain. "God is not unjust!" AMEN
