Word to the Wise
Friday, January 26, 2007 - Sts. Timothy and Titus
[2 Timothy 1:1-8 or Titus 1:1-5 and Mark 4:26-34]This is how it is with the KIngdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and the seed would sprout and grow - he knows not how.
I don't think it's any secret that I like to garden. I grow bearded iris, various annuals like petunias, zinnias and marigolds plus culinary herbs because I love to cook. I like to grow these things from seed. So, the gardening parable used by Jesus is very familiar and powerful to me. I am continually amazed by what comes from the tiniest seeds. A good example is the culinary herb, Basil. Those seed are very small. Petunias are even smaller in seed. Yet both plants produce prodigiously. Keeping this image in mind can help all of us to not undervalue even our smallest efforts to share our faith. As St. Paul put it, "I did the planting. Apollos did the watering. But God gave the increase." The seed may be small, but we have to have faith that God will help it to grow. Our reward is color in the garden and wonderful pesto and a world of faith. AMEN
