Word to the Wise
Wednesday, February 7, 2007 - Fifth Wednesday in Ordinary Time
[Genesis 2:4B-9, 15-17 and Mark 7:14-23]The Lord God gave man this order: "You are free to eat from any of the trees of the garden except the tree of knowledge of good and evil. From that tree you shall not eat; the moment you eat from it you are surely doomed to die.
The first few chapters of Genesis certainly have their share of dramatic moments. God's warning to the first human not to eat of the forbidden tree is one of those because we know what happens next! But the story is still a good one. We'll see soon. But today's moment has some important things to consider. The very fact of a warning has a very important implication. We learn that humans have free will. If they didn't, they wouldn't need a warning not to do something! Any parent knows there's no greater cause of temptation than to forbid a child to do something. That doesn't change much when we grow older, does it? We don't like being told we can't do something by a higher authority when we have a notion that the higher authority has a bad motive. Two days ago, the words, "In the beginning...." introduced us to the idea of a creating God. Yesterday (Tues), the words "in the image of God" introduced us to the profound relationship between God and human. Today, we learn about the freedom built into the human person that allows for good and evil. Why not find your Bible and read these first few chapters and pick out the dramatic moments that introduce one to profound truths about God and human! We may find that we ourselves are characters in the drama! AMEN
