Word to the Wise
Thursday, February 15, 2007 - Sixth Thursday in Ordinary Time
[Genesis 9:1-13 and Mark 8:27-33]This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come, of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you: I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
One of my favorite "Peanuts" cartoons of all time shows Linus and his older sister, Lucy, at a plate glass window watching a heavy rainfall. Lucy says, "Look at it rain cats and dogs! I wonder what would happen if it rained again 40 days and 40 nights?" Linus looks up at her solemnly and says, "That can't happen!" She scowls down at him and says, "And why not?" Linus replies, "The Lord promised he would never again destroy the world by flood, and the rainbow was the sign of the promise - Genesis 9!" Lucy soberly says, "You have no idea what a burden you have lifted from my shoulders!" Linus replies equally soberly, "Sound theology has a way of doing that!" Remembering God's promise is sound theology! God's words to Noah are very similar to God's words to Adam and Eve. Failure to remember God's promise meant terrible consequences for them and for us. Maybe God starts with lessened expectations in the case of Noah and his progeny, but the covenant is the sign of the relationship in faith. We'd do well to remember that covenant and live by it! AMEN
