Word to the Wise
Thursday, March 1, 2007 - Thursday of the First Week in Lent
[Esther C:12, 14-16, 23-25 and Matthew 7:7-12]Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knowck and the door will be opened to you.......Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.
In the Gospel of Matthew, the Lord continually asks for fidelity in all prayer and action. The passage chosen by the Church today brings to an end the Sermon on the Mount. We are asked to pray in childlike fidelity, confident that God will respond appropriately. We are asked to love in such a way that we act toward others as we would have them act toward us. It seems to me that there is an important connection here. The value we place on any other human person has to come from our understanding that they, like we, are children of God. If we do not consider them to have anything to do with our faith, how do we arrive at any belief that they have any dignity or value? Both prayer and the Golden Rule speak to relationship with God and neighbor. We maintain our relationship with both through prayer and conduct. Lent offers an opportunity to do more than confess that we didn't say our prayers or that we were judgmental. Lent offers the chance to look broadly and deeply at our relationship to God and to all the people in our life. Take the time to do it and Lent will take on a new meaning! AMEN
