Word to the Wise
Monday, March 5, 2007 - Monday of the Second Week of Lent
[Daniel 9:4B-10 and Luke 6:36-38]Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.
Generous people do not always know that they are being generous. They simply act according to character. These folks cannot think of themselves in any other way. Sometimes they are a bit profligate and someone has to warn them that they may be causing themselves or others some harm, but that is generally rare occurrence in my experience. Some of us have to be "intentional" about our generosity. We become aware that we have too much or that we give too little, and we have to correct our way of living. I'm sure there are other variations on this. Where would you find yourself on this spectrum? In what way are you generous? Is it in terms of the traditional Time, Treasure and Talent? Is it some other way? Jesus speaks in another place in the gospel about giving a cup of water in his name. This reflects a connection between generosity and faith that is important. Giving out of love and not simply out of habit or "character" puts a whole different dimension on the act. Where would each of us fit on that spectrum? In the back of many churches during Lent there are little cardboard containers for Operation Ricebowl. Is that something that catches our attention? Is there a local effort to benefit those who are hungry, thirsty, sick or imprisoned? Do we make any effort to join that? All these are possibilities for looking at our lives in terms of generosity. Give and gifts will be given to you.......AMEN
