Word to the Wise
Friday, May 4, 2007 - Friday in the Fourth Week of Easter
[Acts 13:26-33 and John 14:1-6]In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.
The discourses at the Last Supper represent a collection of thoughts that the author of the gospel had from the tradition. There are a couple of places where it would appear that the talk was over, only to pick up again with a new chapter! The passage quoted above is a message of comfort to disciples worried about their future after Jesus is gone. He promises to return and bring them to himself. He assures them that there is plenty of room for them and that he is the sure way to eternal life. Ultimately it is the relationship with Jesus that makes the difference. This is more than abstract faith in a distant God, but a genuine love that consoles and strengthens at one and the same time. This kind of love assures us that we will always have a place in the life and heart of the beloved. I find this a great deal more satisfying than simply the thought of having simple "admission" to a "place." Being loved seems to me more attractive than being housed. AMEN
