Word to the Wise
Monday, June 4, 2007 - Ninth Monday in Ordinary Time [St. Peter of Verona OP]
[Tobit 1:3, 2:1A-8 and Mark 12:1-12]He had one other to send, a beloved son. He sent him to them last of all, thinking, 'They will respect my son.'
We know the story. The son was treated like all the other messengers who were sent to collect the owner's share of the crop. The son was killed. Yet, the parable shows how God continues to send messengers to a sinful group of tenants. Does it make sense? Not really. But it is the continual story of the relationship between God and humanity. It is an all too common pattern that humans think they can accomplish whatever they want to do either by force or by just declaring what they want in the face of anything that might hold them responsible. This can apply to modern business or to criminal activity or to politics or even to religious activity. We all too easily forget that we are stewards/tenants and not owners. God expects the vineyard to bear fruit and that fruit belongs to God. Our greedy efforts to have it all can only result in disaster, but God keeps trying to challenge us to change our ways. In human terms, that persistence is crazy. In God's terms that persistence is love. AMEN
