Word to the Wise
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 - Twelfth Tuesday in Ordinary Time
[Genesis 13:2, 5-18 and Matthew 7:6, 12-14]Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the Law and the Prophets....Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.
The "Golden Rule" is known to us all. Jesus says it contains all the Law and the Prophets. It makes eminent good sense. Just try it! That's when one discovers how narrow the gate to life is. The first trap one might fall into is doing unto others IN ORDER THAT they may do the same unto you! Uh oh! See how quickly selfishness and self interest enter the picture? A second trap, a bit more subtle, is to assume that whatever is good for us is good for anybody else. This, too, is a self-centered way of looking at life. The Golden Rule makes a very good examination of conscience at the end of the day. We can review the day and our interactions with others and ask some honest questions. Simple courtesy, kindness and generosity are a good place to start asking those questions. Most people would consider those mutual goals. Then we could throw in those "traps" that I mentioned earlier. Even these few questions will reveal to us how "discipled" or disciplined we are in our everyday efforts to live our faith. AMEN
