Word to the Wise
Tuesday, July 3, 2007 - St. Thomas, Apostle
[Ephesians 2:19-22 and John 20:24-29]You are felow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the Apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone.
A few of the Twelve have managed to capture the imagination of the ages of Christianity. Some of them are mentioned and that's it! Thomas manages to stay in the imagination because of his famous difficulty in accepting the possibility of Jesus' resurrection and insisting on touching the wounds. This earns him the nickname, "Doubting Thomas" which we give to all chronic skeptics. That's certainly a reputation that is less than glorious, even if it earns him the sympathy and understanding of all who struggle with faith. At least they have a patron in "high places." When I was an altar boy as a kid, one of the chores after Mass was to cover the altar with a green felt cloth which had the words, "My Lord and my God" on it. Perhaps those words had some impact, given the vocation I embraced. It is important to remember that those words could be spoken only after a radical denial. So, I look forward to meeting any "Doubting Thomas." He or she is a gift! AMEN
