Word to the Wise
Saturday, July 14, 2007 - Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha
[Genesis 49:29-32; 50:15-26A and Matthew 10:24-33]Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Time and genetics have made it easier and easier for the Lord to count the hairs of my head. But the sparrows are something else. One glimpse at this gospel passage made me immediately turn and look out the window at my bird feeder and see that I had not filled it today. The sparrows were going hungry! So, before setting fingers to keyboard, I hastened to fulfill the scriptures. Those birds have only my absent-mindedness to worry about (and my occasional itinerancy!). Jesus' words, however, are both comforting and challenging in more than one way! It is comforting to be told by the Lord, "Do not be afraid!" but I still worry. It is comforting to be told I'll get better care than the sparrows! The Lord and the sparrows know I am an imperfect agent of divine providence. R. B. ! Don't worry, just keep the feeder full! Sparrows are preachers! AMEN
