Word to the Wise
Thursday, July 26, 2007 - Sts. Joachim and Ann
[Exodus 19:1-2, 9-11, 16-20B and Matthew 13:10-17]The disciples approached Jesus and said, "Why do you speak to the crowd in parables?" He said to them in reply, "Because knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted......"
It is interesting and frustrating to explain or preach in the clearest and most down to earth way one can and realize that some in the audience just aren't going to "get it." However, if this happened to Jesus, I don't suppose I should be surprised if it happens to me! The disciples were chosen by Jesus because they "got it." The parables weren't just "parables" but were revelation to them, which in turn attracted their faith and made the meaning of Jesus' preaching all the richer. As for others, Jesus points out that Isaiah had the same problem. The prophet noted that some people live in denial because they do not want to be healed or to believe since it will mean change in their lives. This is not a matter of being superior to others. It IS a matter of receiving a gift that others have available to them but for various reasons (cf. the parable of the sower and the seed) don't "get it." The idea is to make the gift continually available. That is what evangelization is all about. At the same time, we should be aware of what Jesus says about the disciples (which includes us), "Blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it." AMEN
