Word to the Wise

[Exodus 33:7-11;34:5b-9,28 and Matthew 13:36-43]"If I find favor with you, O Lord, do come along in our company. This is indeed a stiff-necked people; yet pardon our wickedness and sins, and receive us as your own."
These words are often repeated in one way or another by Moses acting as "go-between" for God and the Chosen People. This particular version is rather touching in its simplicity and really sums up centuries of God's relationship with humanity! Yes, Moses is speaking for the Jews, but he might as well be speaking for all posterity in history. Humanity as a whole is a "stiff-necked people." Moses' invitation/plea is both humble and amusing (at least in the NAB translation): Do come along in our company. (As if they could leave God behind, and at times it seemed they were willing to try!) At the Burning Bush, God promised Moses: "I will be with you!" This is a promise I count on and sense in my own prayer. But I still beg God to "come along." I am aware of my own stiff-necked ways and need to reach out and touch God in someway to receive assurance. We all want to ask God, "Receive me as your own!" AMEN
