Word to the Wise
Friday, August 24, 2007 - St. Bartholomew (or Nathanael), apostle
[Revelation 21:9B-14 and John 1:45-51]The wall of the city had twelve courses of stones as its foundation, on which were inscribed the twelve names of the twelve Apostles of the Lamb.
Hmmmmmm.....I'd like to know whose name (or names) appears on that twelfth stone! (I bet you won't find Judas!) This image reminds me of those brick pavements that appear in various places showing the names of either benefactors or persons that benefactors want to memorialize. I like to walk around them and read the names - much, I suppose, like a cemetery! Nevertheless in the case of the pavements, the folks may still be very much alive! It is their lives and resources that made the monument, park, aquarium, church, etc. possible. Perhaps we can see the image from the Book of Revelation in much the same way. The early church obviously saw the church to be "founded on the twelve apostles" and the Book of Revelation refers to the church (the new Jerusalem) as having walls built of stones with the apostles' names inscribed on them. Maybe there was a brick with two names on it - who knows? We'll never know if it was Bartholomew or Nathanael who was one of the apostles. It may have been the same guy but different folks remembered his name differently. We know there were twelve and their response in faith to Jesus served as the foundational leadership which is continued in the Pope and Bishops to this day. AMEN
