Word to the Wise
Thursday, September 27, 2007 - St. Vincent De Paul
[Haggai 1:1-8 and Luke 9:7-9]Herod said, "John I beheaded. Who then is this about whom I hear such things?" And he kept trying to see Jesus.
Herod would eventually get a chance to see Jesus in person, but it would be after Jesus had been arrested (Luke 23:6-12). His only interest was to see Jesus "perform some sign." The musical, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, captured the attitude well with the lines in Herod's song: "Prove to me that you're no fool. Walk across my swimming pool." The message of love and mercy in the Kingdom of God would be wasted on him. The sad thing is that his attitude didn't die with him. It is all too prevalent in popular media. Our own legal institutions forbid the display of anything properly Christian in public places and defend offensive and blasphemous "art" under the guise of "free speech." It's all done under the notion of "the price of living in a free society!" The fate of true prophets is all too well known. John the Baptist and Jesus are certainly not the only ones to die because their message offended powerful political, religious or financial interests. For Catholics, the fate of Archbishop Romero in El Salvador is a striking example! In our world today, religious belief cannot depend on any civil power for its future. Those who have religious faith must depend on the power of their good example. The celebration of the feast of St. Vincent De Paul can serve as a reminder to us of the power of kindness and generosity to convey God's love. If your parish has a St. Vincent De Paul Society, give some thought to joining or helping! Don't wait for the government to do it! AMEN
