Word to the Wise

[Romans 4:13: 16-18 and Luke 12:8-12]Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God. Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.
I think I have mentioned before that part of my daily routine is to see that a couple of bird feeders out in my garden are kept filled. They are visited by droves of sparrows and finches (the finches go for the feeder with thistle seed). I do this for a number of reasons. For one, I love to watch those birds flying, perching, pecking, squabbling, scratching, etc. around those feeders. However, more important to me is the way they remind me of God's providence as Jesus notes in today's gospel scripture. I am certainly one tiny piece of that providence in my efforts to keep the feeders filled in order to meet their insatiable hunger. Those little bodies have to build up some Winter reserves as well as maintain "the daily minimum requirements." It takes some effort on my part to constantly recall that God's providence "rises before the dawn." The hairs on my head seem to make God's job a bit easier by the day, but the sparrows are my principal reminder that God cares for me. As the wonderful old hymn puts it: "His eye is on the sparrow: and I know he watches me!" AMEN
