Word to the Wise
Tuesday, October 30, 2007 - Thirtieth Tuesday in Ordinary Time
[Romans 8:18-25 and Luke 13:18-21]To what shall I compare the Kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch of dough was leavened.
A little research indicates to me that the "measures" in this statement of Jesus' are much larger than the three cups of flour that I typically use in a bread recipe! But the process is still the same chemically! The yeast interacts with the gluten and the dough rises. Jesus says that's how the Kingdom of God operates! It interacts with the given ingredients (provided the mixer does a good job, and in Jesus' day there were no electric mixers!) and the whole mixture of flour, oil, salt and honey (no granulated sugar then!) "rises." One thing that this image reminds me about is the way the Kingdom of God works from within. One might say that the yeast comes from outside! Well, yes, like the preaching does, but the change of life and conversion comes from within when the Word/Spirit works with the available person! One time I failed to add the yeast in my bread machine and I got something that tasted awful and it nearly took a hammer to get that bit to taste! God works within and through us to do good things if only we are open to that "yeast." If we are not, we should not be surprised to find ourselves hardened, tasteless and good for nothing but to be thrown out. AMEN
