Word to the Wise
Thursday, November 29, 2007 - Thirty-fourth Thursday in Ordinary Time
[Daniel 6:12-28 and Luke 21:20-28]And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.
The end of the world can come in many ways! It may simply be a "world" that we are familiar with and which changes with the passage of time. (Remember LEAVE IT TO BEAVER?) It can be the house you lived in which is no longer there! (The one I lived in till three weeks ago here was torn down by a dinosaur mascarading as a dragline!) It can be simply because we move somewhere else. The destruction of Jerusalem and the temple by the Roman army in 70AD really meant the end of the world for many Jews! In the gospel of Luke, that event and the event we call "the Second Coming" are somewhat mixed together. Both refer to the end of a world but one of them has already happened and the other will happen at a time we don't know. For each of us, the "end of the world" comes with natural death. Jesus has good advice for those who are alive at the time of his second coming: "Stand erect and raise your heads!" But that's good advice for all of us who live and die in the meantime. We can live the way he has taught and that gives us more than enough reason to stand erect and keep our heads up! AMEN
