Word to the Wise
Saturday, December 1, 2007 - Thirty-fourth Saturday in Ordinary Time
[Daniel 7:15-27 and Luke 21:34-36]Be vigilant at all times and pray that you may have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.
I grew up in the years of the "Cold War" when there were all kinds of scenarios such as building bomb shelters in one's yard, attack drills in the schools! There were "doomsday" predictions galore in the event of a "nuclear holocaust" (strange use of the word, since a holocaust is a burnt OFFERING). People spoke of the end of civilization "as we know it." Lord knows, the civilization I knew as a child is gone anyhow! No matter what weapons we humans use or how much destruction we wreak, we cannot bring about an "end of the world." Only God can do that. We can only destroy our planet. Creation is great deal more than our pretty sphere circling a minor star like our sun. It is God whom we must stand before, not the political powers of this world or "aliens" from Outer Space! We humans tend to think we created time by inventing clocks to measure it! Before and after, past, present and future have no meaning for God. This is why Jesus' advises us to live rightly in the "present" and not worry about the "future." As Advent begins tomorrow, we are offered a perspective that is described as "the fullness of time" when Christ was born. While stores remind us of ______shopping days before Christmas, we might remember that we have "who knows" many days before we must stand before the Son of Man. Perhaps that might suggest more prayer and right living than Christmas shopping! AMEN
