Word to the Wise
Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God
[Numbers 6:22-27; Galatians 4:4-7; Luke 2:16-21]And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart........
I cannot say that I am a great fan of making New Year's resolutions. In fact, I don't make them at all. However, I am a fan of taking some time on New Year's Eve to reflect on the past year and ask myself what the high and low points were and whether or not there are any lessons or wisdom to be gained. I rather like the line about Mary keeping things in her heart and reflecting on them. Although these words present her as the model disciple, I am by no means presenting myself in that fashion. It's just that by reflecting on my experiences, good and bad, in God's presence, I think I may learn to be a better disciple. I generally spend New Year's Eve rather quietly so that I can do that bit of reflection. The only noise makers will be the cattle on the farm next to my house. My father had the custom (where he got it from I have no idea) of having a glass of port and some sardines and crackers. Whenever I was home for New Year's, I and my two brothers and occasionally my sister would join him for this somewhat unusual feast (I do not recall that my mother was fond of it!). Perhaps by repeating it this evening (considerably before midnight) I can recall much of the wisdom I gained from him and how this may have helped me in 2007. If I cannot resolve to be the model disciple like Mary, I hope I can be a better one in 2008. Happy New Year! AMEN
