Word to the Wise

[Jeremiah 15:10, 16-21 and Matthew 13:44-46]Woe to me, mother, that you gave me birth! - a man of strife and contention to all the land!
Poor Jeremiah! His very name has made it into the dictionary as "JEREMIAD" which is defined as words of lamentation and woe! His book of prophecy contains a lot of both! Today we are confronted with one of his complaints about his lot in life as a prophet. He protests to God that he, Jeremiah, has been a good person and yet God has saddled him with a job that makes people angry at him. God's response is to say that if Jeremiah will just continue to do his job, God will be with him. I think most of us can identify with Jeremiah to some extent. We all have our "Woe is me!" days! On a deeper level, some of us occasionally find ourselves in a complete life situation where we know that the very things we believe in and profess will cause people to be angry with us or shun us! Some religious or clergy find themselves in an assignment for which they feel unqualified and know that whatever they do, somebody is not going to like it and those folks will make that known in no uncertain terms! I know it from my own experience! God says to Jermiah, I am with you, to deliver and rescue you, says the Lord. I will free you from the hand of the wicked, and rescue you from the grasp of the violent." There are times when that assurance will be all that we have to go forward with. It will have to be sufficient! AMEN
