Word to the Wise
Monday, September 8, 2008 - The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
[Micah 5:1-4A or Romans 8:28-30 and Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23]..........Jacob [became] the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ.
Ok, Ok, the date is arbitrary. Nobody knows the actual birth date of Jesus' mother except the people who lived back then and God! But she was a human person just like you and me and that means she had a birthday. Right? September 8 is as good as any! Right? Ask yourself if you have forgotten your mom's birth date (assuming she's no longer living) or, worse still her birthDAY (assuming she's still living!)? The latter is not a good idea, as most of us in Western culture know. Birthdays are a time for both laughter and crying. I admit to being ambiguous about my own as I grow older! But I do appreciate it when people remember it (or at least get the month right). The celebration of the birthday of Mary is a reminder that she was a human person just like us. That makes her our "sister." But she is also the "the Mother of God" which makes her "Mom" in a way. We don't want to push that image too hard - it's just that this day is less about "sister" (or fellow human) and more about "Mom" (Mother of God). We can relate to her in any number of ways. All that being said, it's still a good idea to remember Mom's birthday and celebrate all she means to us. Mary is no exception! AMEN
