Word to the Wise

[Hebrews 13:1-8 and Mark 6:14-25]Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
The Letter to the Hebrews is concerned in no small part with encouraging a community to stand fast in their faith. One of the major ways it does this is to give the history of many well known figures who were noted for their faith and offer them as examples and heroes to be imitated. The words quoted above are a kind of summation of that principle. Furthermore, the words about Jesus are meant to affirm the basic message of faith as a warning against false preaching that may come from other sources. In my own case, these words are a challenge to consider my teachers from the past. Who had the most influence on my faith? Whose example was pivotal? I think it would take a lot longer to do this than I have space or time to do here. One thing I can say is that the process is not over. I am still being inspired by the faith of others and finding the same Christ in their lives. I hope something similar may be said for you! AMEN
