TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2009 ST. SCHOLASTICA, osb, VIRGIN [Genesis 1:20 - 2-4A and Mark 7:1-13] God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them! If we take the notion of "day" in the first chapter of Genesis as meaning one of our 24 hour days and that creation took place over the period of a week, then it becomes clear that human beings were created on Friday! TGIF! God created Friday! God creates humanity on Friday and dies for it on Friday! But, even more importantly, we humans are made in God's image! That image involves the complementarity of male and female! It is not God's fault that humans chose to rebel (more of this as we go through Genesis). The complementarity is an original blessing and was not meant to be "the battle of the sexes!" Given that complementarity, it is clear (and becomes clearer in the next chapter) that the human person was not created to be alone. Even a celibate person like myself must have friendship at least to remain healthy. (This makes the vocation of the Hermit even more challenging - but that is not an anti-social vocation, as Thomas Merton showed.) As we meditate on Genesis and its profound truths over the next few days, God's profound relationship with the human person and then with a Chosen People will come into focus and challenge us to see ourselves as part of a greater history. At any rate, we can be glad that God was working on Friday! AMEN ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Special note - this day only. Each year we Dominican Friars of the Southern Dominican Province USA exercise in a special way the mendicant side of our vocation. We have students in the seminary and we have elderly and infirm brothers to care for. So, we must become beggars from time to time! The way we do this is through our "1216 CAMPAIGN" (so named for the year the Order of Preachers - Dominicans - was officially founded). If you feel so moved and are able to help us, you can send your tax deductible gift to SOUTHERN DOMINICAN PROVINCE, 1216 CAMPAIGN, 1421 N. Causeway Blvd., #200, Metairie, LA 70001. Any amount ($12.16, $121.60, $1216.00 - whatever) will be truly appreciated. Since I am getting toward the older end of this province, I am personally grateful for all our benefactors do for us! If possible please note on your check 1216 Campaign-Fr. RB so the folks in the office will know that I contacted you. Many thanks for your patience and generosity.
