Word to the Wise
Friday, March 13, 2009 - Friday in the Second Week of Lent
[Genesis 37:3-4, 12-13A, 17B-28A and Matthew 21:33-43, 45-46]Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes?" Therefore, I say to you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.
It is frustrating to give one's trust or efforts to someone or something and to have it rejected! Rejection is a very painful thing to experience. Sometimes it can be violent. Joseph is stripped of his special garment and thrown into a cistern by his envious brothers and then sold into slavery. Jesus is rejected by the religious authorities who consider him a religious and political threat and they find a way to put him to death! The irony in Jesus' rejection is that those who reject him are rejecting the fulfillment that was long expected but in a form that was unacceptable to their expectations. On occasion Jesus shows his frustration at their blindness. The old saying is true: There are none so blind as those who will not see. Those who were in leadership would pay the price of being deprived of that leadership eventually through the destruction of the temple by the Romans in 70AD. Perhaps we might spend a few moments considering both the times when we rejected someone or were rejected by someone. It might be a time to consider forgiving or asking for forgiveness. AMEN
