Word to the Wise
Friday, April 17, 2009 - Friday in the Octave of Easter
[Acts 4:1-12 and John 21:1-14]Jesus said to them, "Come, have breakfast." And none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish.
The gospel scripture for today should have a number of familiar echoes in it. There is the great catch of fish, which is featured in the original call of the disciples. And there is the distribution of bread and fish, which should remind us of Jesus' feeding of the multitudes! The context, however, is very different. This is the Risen Lord and not the Jesus of Nazareth whom the disciples had followed from place to place! The message stays the same. We can do much more with faith in Christ than we can do by our own efforts. And, we are fed by the Risen Lord. Those basic elements of faith continue with us today! Any fisherman can tell you that it can make a difference which side of the boat you fish from! However, sometimes the Lord has to tell us to do this! Having faith in his message will mean that we get to eat breakfast with him! AMEN
