Word to the Wise
Wednesday, May 27, 2009 - Wednesday in the Seventh Week of Easter
[Acts 20:28-38 and John 17:11b-19]I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the Evil One......Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth
I think anyone but a scripture scholar or a mystic could understandably be puzzled or bewildered by the effort to work through the Last Supper discourse of Jesus! It repeats and spirals and seems to be a maze of abstractions at times. Yet, a slow approach can yield some very fine results. Dominican that I am, a member of an Order whose motto (or at least one of them!) is TRUTH, I find these lines very comforting. I definitely appreciate the words that indicate Jesus' intercession that I be kept from the Evil One. I try to do my best to repeat that every morning by the long list of names that I think of during the rosary! Secondly, Each day I confront the word of God in the scriptures assigned in the lectionary and try to speak the truth in this space to what one of my listeners calls my "e-church!" It will take you awhile, but start at chapter 14 of the Gospel of John and take it a little bit at a time till you finally wind up going to the Garden of Gethsemani. AMEN
