SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 2009 IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY [2 Corinthians 12:1-10 and Luke 2:41-51] .....and his mother kept all these things in her heart.... The feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is followed by one that essentially provides a slightly broader theological perspective - a human heart that is a motherly heart. We have a similar "pairing" in September where the feast of the Holy Cross (Sept. 14) is followed immediately by the feast of the Sorrowful Mother (Sept. 15). It seems to me that the broader perspective keynotes the necessity to "follow up" on the love that comes to us from Christ. Mary is depicted (especially in the Gospel of Luke) as the first and ideal disciple. She keeps all that she hears and sees from her son "in her heart." Perhaps nowadays we would use the expression: "take it to heart.." which means not only hearing it but doing something about it. If the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary can remind us of the need to take the gospel to heart and act upon it, then the observance is worth having in the calendar! AMEN
