Word to the Wise
Saturday, June 27, 2009 - Saturday in the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time
[Genesis 18:1-15 and Matthew 8:5-17]Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed. Shall I really bear a child, old as I am?
The contrast between Sarah and the Centurion in the two scriptures today is interesting! Sarah is skeptical. The Centurion simply takes the culture of command as a given! They are at different ends of the trust spectrum. She knows the biological time clock long ago left her out of child-bearing. The Centurion has a paralyzed servant whom he values highly enough to go looking for help for that servant. Most of us would probably fall somewhere in between them on the spectrum. It should be noted that the hopes of both Sarah (crushed as they were) and the Centurion are realized. She bears a child in response to Abraham's faith and the servant is healed by Jesus' word in response to the faith of the Centurion. Perhaps there's a tiny clue there to think about. The faith of others may indeed be a source of healing for us. Our faith may be a source of healing for others. We cannot determine the course of God's providence, but we can participate in it through our prayer and faith. We can be like Abraham and that Centurion. The line from Genesis should be a reminder to us: Is anything too marvelous for the Lord to do? AMEN
