Word to the Wise
Monday, July 6, 2009 - Monday in the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time
[Genesis 28:10-22A and Matthew 9:18-26]When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he exclaimed: "Truly the Lord is in this spot, although I did not know it." In solemn wonder her cried out: "How awesome is this shrine! This is nothing else but an abode of God, and that is the gateway to heaven!"
If you fall asleep in a church, you may have some interesting dreams! We don't know what kind of shrine Jacob wandered into. We aren't told that it was built by any of his people. Chances are that it was not. His dream is an affirmation of God's promise to make the Chosen People a great nation. Imagine having such a sacred dream in a pagan shrine! However, we do not choose where God can be or not be. Our rules apply to our behavior in places that we have built. God speaks in many voices and in many places. As I write this, I am about a minute's walk from the Pacific Ocean on the coast of Oregon. Several times a day I walk on the rocky path along the shore and listen to the constantly moving and roaring surf. I've been coming here annually for the last six years or so. A psalm tells me: "Greater than the roar of many waters, more glorious than the surgings of the sea!" is the voice of the Lord. That is true, but God can speak through this great natural wonder. Truly the Lord is in this spot and I do know it! How awesome is this shrine! AMEN
