Word to the Wise
Wednesday, July 29, 2009 - St. Martha
[Exodus 34:29-35 and John 11:19-27 or Luke 10:38-42]Yes, Lord, I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world!
That magnificent profession of faith comes from the same lady who earlier in Jesus' ministry complained: Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me." The contrast between the two gospel selections offered to us by the Church for the feast of Saint Martha is worth our note. Martha's personality seems consistent even though the Gospels of Luke and John are very different stories! She's a very animated character, a "do-er." Her grief over her brother's death and her irritation over her sister's "inactivity" lead her to scold Jesus on both these occasions! Lord, if you have been here, my brother would not have died! A great deal of theological ink has flowed over both these incidents. I simply want to give our friend, Martha, her due! She's a true flesh-and-blood character who says what she thinks and feels whether it be God or human that she's talking to! There's a very valuable lesson in her way of doing things. We don't have to change personalities when we talk to God. AMEN
