Word to the Wise
Saturday, August 22, 2009 - Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
[Ruth 2:1-3, 8-11; 4:13-17 and Matthew 23:1-12]Boaz took Ruth. When they came together as man and wife, the Lord enabled her to conceive and she bore a son.....And the neighbor women gave his name, at the news that a grandson had been born to Naomi. They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.
If you get your Bible out and read the two "genealogies" of Jesus - Matthew 1:5-6 and Luke 3:32 - there you will find the reference to Obed, the father of Jesse, the father of David. Matthew also mentions Ruth by name in the same verse, but Luke does not. What is interesting about Ruth is that she is not Jewish. She is a Moabite woman. Along with some other interesting non-Jewish ladies (Tamar, Rahab and Bathsheba) in Jesus' past, she becomes part of God's plan in regard to salvation. My father was very interested in genealogy and completed a couple of informal books on our family history. From some of the stories he told me, some of our ancestors were rather colorful. I'm not so sure that most of us would look at a genealogy and see it as God's plan for us. If Jesus' own ancestry is any indication, we'd better be ready for some surprises. We might even become one of those surprises! AMEN (Note to the Beloved Congregation. Today marks the sixth anniversary of the first WTTW.)
