Word to the Wise
Saturday, December 5, 2009 - Saturday in the First Week of Advent
[Isaiah 30:19-21, 23-26 and ]No longer will your Teacher hide himself, but with your own eyes you shall see your Teacher, while from behind, a voice shall sound in your ears: "This is the way; walk in it," when you would turn to the right or to the left. [Isaiah]
"Rosy futures" are things that we associate with politicians and election campaigns, but one has to admit that hope feeds on rosy futures. Isaiah is trying to encourage the returning exiles from Babylon, who are coming back to a ruined situation to rebuild. I find his words very encouraging and I look forward to the birth of the Teacher! I remind myself that I owe to that Teacher the voice which points out the way in which I should walk! That "way" for me is described in today's gospel scripture in which the Teacher sends out disciples to "the lost sheep of the house of Israel!" I'm an itinerant preacher. No, I'm not preaching to Jewish synagogues (an interesting challenge, however!). I'm preaching mostly to Catholic people and trying my best to bring some healing to them with the Word of God. I see this most clearly when hearing confessions during a parish mission and learning that a person hasn't "been to confession" in years! Rosy futures have a way of disappointing us because we like to have our expectations met. For myself I try not to forget that anything involving roses involves thorns too! The Teacher will point out the way. We can put our hopes there. AMEN
