Word to the Wise
Friday, December 11, 2009 - Friday in the Second Week of Advent
[Isaiah 48:17-19 and Matthew 11:16-19]For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, 'He is possessed by a demon.' The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said, 'Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.'
Our celebration of the Advent and Christmas seasons is generally shaped by our expectations. If we don't expect much to happen, generally not much happens! If we are not accustomed to paying attention to Advent and its liturgical and spiritual significance, then it passes as a change in the decor of the church and nothing else. If A christmas tree and presents are all we expect for Christmas, then that is all that usually happens. Unfortunately, what I have just described is true in many Catholic homes. Jesus points out that some folks have expectations that blind them to very important realities. John the Bapist and Jesus both offered ways of conversion and hope and they were dismissed by the blindness and expectations of many people. If our expectations of the Christ child are that he will sit in that crib scene in our living room till we take down the decorations and put them back in the attic or hall closet, and then stay there till next Christmas, we are going to miss most of the real meaning of Christmas. Advent challenges us to take a good long look at our expectations. Who are we waiting for and what difference does he make? AMEN
