Word to the Wise
Tuesday, January 19, 2010 - Tuesday in the Second Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Samuel 16:1-13 and Mark 2:23-28]But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature, because I have rejected him. Not as man sees does God see, because he sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart." [1 Samuel]
Samuel is looking for the man who will replace crazy Saul as king of Israel! He knows that one of Jesse's boys is the chosen one but one after another the Lord says, "Nah! Not him!" Finally they get to the youngest who isn't even important enough to bring to the line-up, and Surprise, Surprise! it's David! The rest is history! But those lines quoted above could serve all of us well if we were to pay closer attention to them more often! We will often say that one cannot judge a book from its cover, but the publishers know how important that cover is for getting our attention. We know that the "blurb" on the cover rarely does justice to the book at all, but it may help sell the book to us. Getting to the heart of someone is very difficult - ask any married person or spiritual director! We also know that people who SEEM to be the perfect candidate for a position or responsibility often turn out to be a poor choice. If nothing else, our political or ecclesiastical choices should tell us that! No one is perfect, and David turned out to be considerably less than perfect for someone who would be an ancestor of Jesus! The Lord looked into David's heart and said, "I can work with him!" I am praying for myself and everyone else that the Lord feels the same way about us! AMEN
