Word to the Wise
Friday, January 29, 2010 - Friday in the Third Week in Ordinary time
[2 Samuel 11:1-4A, 5-10A, 13-17 and Mark 4:26-34]To what shall we compare the Kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade. [Mark]
I am fond of gardening and I never cease to wonder at the process that turns a tiny seed into a large plant. I raise Tall Bearded Irises and am fond of cross pollinating them to get seed to plant and see what results from the "cross." I've gotten some really pretty ones and some so-so ones! It takes at least two years from polllination to first bloom, so one must be patient! The first part of the parable in today's gospel refers to the farmer waiting day and night! The early Christian community had to deal with the problem of establishing itself amid the loss of the temple and gradual loss of connection with the Jewish community. It wasn't happening overnight! They would have to recall this parable of the seed again and again. The same has to be true of us, too. We plant the seed by our example of faith and life. The results may not be obvious to us and we may never know them. As an itinerant preacher, I am aware of that every day. The important thing is that we spread the word and let the Lord give the increase. AMEN
