Word to the Wise
Saturday, February 20, 2010 - Saturday After Ash Wednesday
[Isaiah 58:9B-14 and Luke 5:27-32]Thus says the Lord: If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday..[Isaiah]
Today's passage from Isaiah is a continuation (from yesterday's passage) of his catalog of accusations against the leadership and elite of Jerusalem and elsewhere. It is a rather grim list and much of it should not be a surprise to us in its general character. We see plenty of it in our own time and maybe in our own conduct. To be fair in one's dealings, generous in sharing one's bounty, and to avoid malicious talk are all things that most of us would want to cultivate in our own character and expect in others. When these things are missing, human society becomes dangerous. The recent financial collapse in the housing market that heralded a host of other economic woes was due in no small part to human greed - individual and collective (corporate). Each day the news media (who are not immune to fault themselves) bring more news of higher prices and huge bonuses! One could hope and pray for a collective examination of conscience on the part of major economic "players" as well as those who feel that our planet is just one giant commodity to be bought and sold till there's nothing left. But we have to start with ourselves and ask some hard questions. Isaiah gives us a good starting point! AMEN
