Word to the Wise
Wednesday, March 17, 2010 - Wednesday in the Fourth Week of Lent
[Isaiah 49:8-15 and John 5:17-30]But Zion said, "The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me." Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you.
This passage from Isaiah invokes the intimate relationship between child and mother as an image of God's relationship to Israel! We in our culture are so accustomed to masculine images of God (who has no gender) that this one from Isaiah truly stands out! Of course, Moms everywhere might put on a rueful smile and say, "Well there was the time when I forgot that I sent ...........to his/her room after some misdeed or I was late picking her/him up from school, and had an indignant child on my hands! For "Zion" the issue was a serious one because they believed they had been sent into exile because of their sins and God had forgotten them! Through Isaiah, God sends reassurance! God the Mom has not forgotten! Lent is especially a time to consider that God does not forget. If nothing else, the image of Jesus on the cross and the liturgy on Good Friday, ought to convince anyone of faith that God did not and does not forget. Along with Zion, we must understand that our "exile" was self-chosen as a result of our own mistakes. Sometimes it takes God a while to undo them! AMEN
