Word to the Wise
Friday, March 26, 2010 - Friday in the Fifth Week of Lent
[Jeremiah 20:10-13 and John 10:31-42]I hear the whisperings of many: "Terror on every side! Denounce! let us denounce him!" All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine........
Jeremiah's words might give one the impression that he was paranoid! In his case, however, his fears were very real and had plenty of evidence to back them up! His fate would be the fate of most of the famous Old Testament prophets and that of the New Testament prophet, John the Baptist! Prophets are known for saying things that threaten people in power. From the earliest days, the Christian community found Jeremiah and Isaiah to be "types" of what they knew of Jesus' life and death. The betrayal of Jesus by one of his own apostles seemed too much like Jermiah to be coincidence! Unlike Jesus, however, Jeremiah was prone to bemoan his fate! Yet he shows confidence in God's providence and in the ultimate victory of God's ways over human ways. Jesus' own confidence is rooted in his relationship to his Father and he goes forth to Jerusalem in that confidence. We can join the journey by reading carefully the scriptures assigned for the next week up to Easter! AMEN
