Word to the Wise
Sunday, April 4, 2010 - Easter Sunday - The Resurrection of the Lord
[Acts 10:334a, 37-43; Colossians 3:1-4 or 1 Corinthians 5:6b-8; John 20:1-9 or Luke 24:13-35]They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead......(Acts) And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?"..... (Luke)
It takes a bit of time for our pilgrimage to join the two disciples who passed us by yesterday, headed to Emmaus after the emotionally drenching events of the past couple of days. Our tour guides, Luke, Paul and John are already giving us their "spin" on the events! David's song has lines about the cornerstone!!! When we catch up to the two disciples we discover that there is a third party there who listens patiently to all that is being communicated by everyone. At times he nods and at other times he just shakes his head in a mixture of exasperation and wonder. We might be inclined to wonder, "Who invited him?" but our two companions have already invited him to join us all for dinner. Before we can eat, we have been given a thorough education by the stranger about how to understand all the events of the past few days in terms of the scriptures. Then the stranger takes over the meal and in the breaking of the bread we learn why that tomb is empty!!!!! So, back we all go to Jerusalem to share the Good News and learn even more! It is an exciting time and there's no way to sum it up easily. Perhaps the words, "CHRIST IS RISEN! ALLELUIA!" come as close as any! Is there no end to this pilgrimage? We still have a ways to go, because the Lord has some marching orders for us. We have to stick around for that. In the meantime, we just try to celebrate the Good News! We call family or gather friends. Over and over again, as if it has just happened that minute, we say: CHRIST IS RISEN! ALLELUIA! The pilgrimage continues, but now we know why. AMEN To all my beloved Congregation around the world: A Blessed Easter! CHRIST IS RISEN! ALLELUIA!
