Word to the Wise
Tuesday, April 6, 2010 - Tuesday in the Octave of Easter
[Acts 2:36-41 and John 20:11-18]"Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" Mary went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord, " and then reported what he had told her.
The passage quoted above is the reason why Mary Magdalen is a special patroness of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans)! She was the first to preach the truth of the resurrection of the Lord! Dominican women around the world look to her and our sister, St. Catherine of Siena, as special patronesses in the effort to expand preaching opportunities for women in our church. However, the message that they preached is the one that has remained at the center of Christian preaching since the day Mary Magdalen met Jesus outside the tomb: CHRIST IS RISEN. The challenge in our own day is to capture some of the enthusiasm and wonder of the original event. Holy Week and Easter have a way of "coming and going" and fading rapidly away in the rush toward graduation at the end of the school year! All of us who have been baptized, especially the many who were baptized this Easter, should be telling the world what the Lord has told us! This is the message of hope that endures beyond the unfound Easter eggs and the tummy aches from chocolate bunnies! CHRIST IS RISEN! ALLELUIA! AMEN!
