Word to the Wise
Tuesday, April 13, 2010 - Tuesday in the Second Week of Easter
[Acts 4:32-37 and John 3:7b-15]The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. With great power the Apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord, Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. [Acts}
This passage from the Acts of the Apostles (and one at 2:42-47) has served as the inspiration to the founders of many religious communities within the church over the centuries. To Dominicans it will sound familiar because we embraced at the beginning of our foundation, and continue to embrace, the Rule of St. Augustine as part of our governing charter. The opening words from that document state that the reason we come together is so that we can live with one heart and mind in community. This was done for two reasons. The pope at the time asked Dominic to adopt an existing "rule" and the heretical preaching communities in Southern France which gave rise to the Order were quite literally following the model in the Acts of the Apostles. These words from ACTS, then and now, are basic for the success of any religious community. Those who strive to live according to these words (and have any knowledge of the history of Christian communities) realize that the ideal requires much effort. In our own age and culture when individualism reigns supremely and all religious motivation is viewed skeptically the model proposed in Acts seems too "rosy" and glossed over. However, Acts does not hesitate to report conflict and St. Paul mentions many problems encountered in maintaining the "one heart and mind." I have served as a local superior, pastor and formation director and I am well aware of the challenges involved in realizing that goal. "Putting skin on" ideals requires faith and love and daily renewal of intentions. When the words of Acts serve as a vehicle for the Holy Spirit working in the "hearts and minds" of community members, great things can happen, but let no one think it is a smooth process!!! AMEN
