Word to the Wise
Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - Tuesday in the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time
[1 Peter 1:10-16 and Mark 10:28-31]It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you with regard to the things that have now been announced to you by those who preached the Good News to you through the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels longed to look. [1 Peter]
The early Christian community had available to them the scriptures from their Jewish tradition. These served as the basis for their preaching. This was particularly true in regard to the prophets whose writings were scrutinzed for references that were interpreted in the light of the experience of the community with the story of Jesus. The same would be true in regard to the way in which the community lived. The Letter of Peter calls attention to the preaching of the prophets and then speaks to the necessity of putting that preaching into daily practice. This would itself be a powerful preaching. We could ask ourselves the same questions in our own day. The prophets warned about worshipping God at the temple while living in a way that contradicted that worship. Can we ask ourselves if anyone could conclude that we are Christians simply from observing how we live? The answer to that question will tell us how powerful our preaching is. AMEN
